Back It Up 2019
Workshop & Performance
overview
Back It Up is a workshop and an interactive performance which looks at the ways dance can be documented. During the workshop the participants get inspired by various graphical notation systems and try to translate the movements presented by a dancer. Later the audience have a chance to control the performance of two swing dancers.
Many have tried to translate movement into scores, but none have managed to express the vital elements of social dancing: the history and cultural values that shape the full experience. I collected examples of (mis)translations of dance and the social impact it can have.
